1946年10月5日生まれ。神奈川県出身。
玉川大学文学部 芸術学部演劇学科卒。
1970年文学座へ入団。多くの舞台で主演を務め、1979年退座。
1989年つかこうへい演出の舞台『幕末純情伝』にて坂本龍馬役にて主演、1991年には連続ドラマ『東京ラブストーリー』に出演、一躍脚光を浴びる。
1992年有限会社徳馬企画（現・有限会社レッドホースヒルズカンパニー）を設立、マネジメント業務を開始。2012年には自らが塾長となり、「ドラマスクール・レッドホースヒルズ」を設立し、後進の育成に務める（2019年に終了）。
近年では数々のバラエティにも出演し、ユーモラスな一面も知られる。
2024年ハリウッド製作の時代劇ドラマシリーズ『SHOGUN 将軍』にて、戸田広松役を演じ、日本のみならず多くの人の心を打つ。

Born on October 5, 1946, in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Performing Arts.
In 1970, he joined the Bungakuza Theatre Company, where he starred in numerous stage productions before leaving the company in 1979.
In 1989, he played the lead role of Ryoma Sakamoto in Bakumatsu Junjoden, directed by Kohei Tsuka.
In 1991, he gained widespread recognition for his appearance in the popular TV drama series Tokyo Love Story.
In recent years, he has also been active in variety shows, showcasing his humorous and light-hearted personality.
In 1992, he founded Tokuma Kikaku Co., Ltd. (now Redhorse Hills Company), launching his work in talent management.
In 2012, he established the Drama School Redhorse Hills, serving as its head to nurture the next generation of performers.
(The school concluded its activities in 2019.)
In 2024, he portrayed Hiromatsu Toda in the Hollywood-produced historical drama series SHŌGUN, delivering a performance that deeply resonated with audiences both in Japan and abroad.
